3/11/2010 – MSL Co-PI Honored by NASPA
NASPA announced an award named in honor of MSL's Co-PI. The Susan R. Komives Student Leadership Researcher Award will be awarded annually by the Student Leadership Programs Knowledge Community.
3/11/2010 – MSL Receives NASPA Award
MSL received the 2010 Spotlight of the Year Award from the NASPA Student Leadership Programs Knowledge Community at the 2010 annual conference in Chicago. The purpose of this award is to recognize the contributions of members who are transforming higher education through best practices that have been recognized by the SLP-KC.
3/1/2010 – National MSL Benchmark Dataset
Starting in the 2011 data collection, the MSL will provide a National MSL Benchmark Dataset to all participating schools as part of the MSL Standard service. The purpose of this dataset will be for use by Institutional Research and other data driven researchers at MSL participating schools to conduct their own school specific analyses, including a representative subset of the MSL National Benchmark Data.
3/1/2010 – MSL 2011 enrollment opens!
MSL formally opened enrollment today in preparation for the Spring 2011 data collection. This marks our fourth national and third international data collection. MSL 2011 offers exciting new services, and institutions that enroll quickly will be rewarded with a significant discount.
1/28/2010 – MSL PI Awarded Student Leadership Research Award
John P. Dugan is the first recipient of the "Student Leadership Research Award" presented by the NASPA Student Leadership Programs Knowledge Community. The Multi-institutional Study of Leadership (Co-PIs Dugan, Komives, and Owen) is receiving the Spotlight of the Year Award from the SLPKC. The Award will be presented at the NASPA conference in March.
10/13/2009 – ILA Board Appointment
Susan R. Komives has recently been appointed to the Board of the International Leadership Association (ILA). "The International Leadership Association is the global network for all those who practice, study and teach leadership. The ILA promotes a deeper understanding of leadership knowledge and practices for the greater good of individuals and communities worldwide (www.ila-net.org).
Komives joins other new board members Brad Jackson, the Fletcher Building Education Trust Chair of Leadership in the Business School at the University of Auckland; Mansour Javidan, Dean of Research and Garvin Distinguished Professor at the Thunderbird School of Global Management and co-principal investigator of the GLOBE study; Roger H. Sublett, President of Union Institute & University; Sherry Penney, the founding director of the Center for Collaborative Leadership and holds the Sherry H. Penney Professor of Leadership in the College of Management at the University of Massachusetts Boston; and Ellen van Velsor, a Senior Fellow, Advancement & Partnership and R&D Group Director of Individual Leader Development at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL).
Komives is co-PI for MSL, a Professor of College Student Development and co-founder of the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs (NCLP) at the University of Maryland. She is co-author of numerous leadership books including Exploring Leadership (Jossey-Bass, 2007), co-editor of Leadership for a Better World (Jossey-Bass, 2009) and The Handbook of Student Leadership Programs (NCLP, 2006). She will serve on the Board from 2009-2012.

9/18/2009 – C. Charles Jackson Grant
MSL has received a $25,000 grant from the C. Charles Jackson Foundation. The grant is designated to provide partial scholarships to support the involvement of institutions that need financial assistance to participate in the MSL 2010 study. To apply, complete the scholarship application by October 16, 2009.

NCLP partner Jossey-Bass has recently published a book on leadership by MSL PI Susan Komives and research team member Wendy Wagner. 4/22/2009 – Printable Overview
This printable overview of the MSL instrument is now available for download. It provides additional information about MSL scales, variables, conceptual and theoretical models, etc. It also suggests ways in which MSL data could be used for assessment, evaluation, and research.
4/22/2009 – Gannon Fellowship
MSL Co-Principal Investigator Dr. John Dugan was recently named a Faculty Fellow with the Gannon Center for Women and Leadership at Loyola University Chicago. The fellowship will release Dr. Dugan from all teaching responsibilities for the spring 2010 semester. During this time he will be engaged in active research through the Center using data collected as part of MSL 2009. The focus of this research will be on understanding the pathways through which college women’s overarching leadership potential (i.e., leadership efficacy, leadership capacity, and leadership behaviors) is developed as well as conditional influences of race in this process.
The Gannon Center is home to the first Women’s Studies program at a Jesuit university in the United States as well as the Women and Leadership Archives.
4/6/2009 – NASPA Certificate
Susan Komives, John Dugan, and Julie Owen were NASPA's Spotlight Series recipients for April, 2009. They were honored with this certificate of acknowledgement.
