Theoretical Model
The social change model (SCM; HERI, 1996) was selected as the theoretical frame for MSL. It is:
- Broadly applicable
- Consistent with the emerging leadership paradigm
- Created specifically for college students
- One of the most well known student leadership models (Kezar, Carducci, & Contreras-McGavin, 2006)
SCM describes leadership as a purposeful, collaborative, values-driven process. Its central principles—social responsibility and change for the common good—are assessed through eight core values that describe students’ level of self-awareness and ability to work with others (HERI).
These values are organized into three levels of study:
Individual Level: |
Consciousness of self |
Group Level: |
Common purpose |
Societal Level: |
Citizenship |
All Levels: |
Change for the common good |
The dynamic interplay of the first seven items contributes to social change for the common good, the final critical value (HERI).
Click here for definitions for each of the core values. The social change model is available through the NCLP.
