Summer 2011 - NEW STEM School Coalition Started for MSL 2012

Registration for the MSL 2012 is currently underway and includes a new coalition of schools interested in science and engineering. The STEM Coalition will allow for powerful benchmarking of learning outcomes and critical college experiences. Participating campuses will be provided direct comparisons between an individual school, the set of coalition schools, and national normative data. Summer 2011 - Catholic Schools Coalition Expands for 2012 MSL

The coalition started back in 2009 and collects data together every three years. This provides a rich, shared dataset that allows for benchmarking with other Catholic institutions as well as the ability to differentiate results based on affiliation (e.g., Jesuit, Dominican). Additionally, the Coalition adds a set of unique questions to more deeply probe the impact of Catholic mission and identity on educational experiences and to explore student attitudes about the influence of the college/university on mission-related outcomes.

Registration for the MSL is currently underway and 16 Catholic schools have already registered. Another 14 institutions are actively considering participation. Read More >>

6/8/2011 - Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership Announces
New Three-Year Research Cycle – 2012/2015/2018

Theory. Research. Practice. Since the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL) was first administered during the spring of 2006, these three concepts have remained key to the success and growth of the study. Since that initial data collection, the MSL has been conducted annually in 2009, 2010, and 2011. With nearly 200 schools having participated and hundreds of thousands of respondents overall, the MSL has collected the single largest research dataset documenting student leadership development in higher education.

July/August 2011 - Recent Publication

Article based on MSL data now available examining leadership across US and Mexican cultures.

The July/August 2011 issue of the Journal of College Student Development contains a publication by MSL PI John Dugan and collaborators Ana M. Rossetti Morosini and Michael R. Beazley on "Cultural Transferability of Socially Responsible Leadership: Findings From the United States and Mexico." The purpose of this study was to examine similarities and differences in students' capacities for socially responsible leadership as well as significant predictors of its development at a higher education institution in Mexico as compared with US schools.Read the article >>

March/April 2011 - Recent Publication

The latest research article based on MSL data is now available!

The March/April 2011 issue of the Journal of College Student Development contains a publication by MSL PI John Dugan and collaborator Lauren Yurman on "Commonalities and Differences Among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual College Students: Considerations for Research and Practice." Subjects were 980 LGB self-identified students from the MSL data set, and found many similarities among LGB student subsets across a number of outcome variables. Read the article >>

Spring 2011 - Recent Publication

Jossey-Bass, in conjunction with the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs, has recently published the 2nd edition of The Handbook For Student Leadership Development, edited by MSL co-PIs Susan Komives, John Dugan, and Julie Owen as well as Craig Slack, Wendy Wagner, and Associates. Many of the chapters reference data and research from the MSL.

4/28/2010 – Measuring Quality Inventory

MSL has been included in the Measuring Quality Inventory, an online inventory of resources designed to assist higher education faculty and staff in the challenging task of assessing academic and support programs as well as institutional effectiveness, more broadly.  The Measuring Quality Inventory is made possible by a partnership between the Association for Institutional Research, the American Council on Education Center for Policy Analysis, and the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment.

3/11/2010 – MSL Co-PI Honored by NASPA

NASPA announced an award named in honor of MSL's Co-PI. The Susan R. Komives Student Leadership Researcher Award will be awarded annually by the Student Leadership Programs Knowledge Community.

3/11/2010 – MSL Receives NASPA Award

MSL received the 2010 Spotlight of the Year Award from the NASPA Student Leadership Programs Knowledge Community at the 2010 annual conference in Chicago. The purpose of this award is to recognize the contributions of members who are transforming higher education through best practices that have been recognized by the SLP-KC.

1/28/2010 – MSL PI Awarded Student Leadership Research Award

John P. Dugan is the first recipient of the "Student Leadership Research Award" presented by the NASPA Student Leadership Programs Knowledge Community. The Multi-institutional Study of Leadership (Co-PIs Dugan, Komives, and Owen) is receiving the Spotlight of the Year Award from the SLPKC. The Award will be presented at the NASPA conference in March.

10/13/2009 – ILA Board Appointment

Susan R. Komives has recently been appointed to the Board of the International Leadership Association (ILA). "The International Leadership Association is the global network for all those who practice, study and teach leadership. The ILA promotes a deeper understanding of leadership knowledge and practices for the greater good of individuals and communities worldwide (www.ila-net.org).

Komives joins other new board members Brad Jackson, the Fletcher Building Education Trust Chair of Leadership in the Business School at the University of Auckland; Mansour Javidan, Dean of Research and Garvin Distinguished Professor at the Thunderbird School of Global Management and co-principal investigator of the GLOBE study; Roger H. Sublett, President of Union Institute & University; Sherry Penney, the founding director of the Center for Collaborative Leadership and holds the Sherry H. Penney Professor of Leadership in the College of Management at the University of Massachusetts Boston; and Ellen van Velsor, a Senior Fellow, Advancement & Partnership and R&D Group Director of Individual Leader Development at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL).

Komives is co-PI for MSL, a Professor of College Student Development and co-founder of the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs (NCLP) at the University of Maryland. She is co-author of numerous leadership books including Exploring Leadership (Jossey-Bass, 2007), co-editor of Leadership for a Better World (Jossey-Bass, 2009) and The Handbook of Student Leadership Programs (NCLP, 2006). She will serve on the Board from 2009-2012.

6/26/2009 – Recent Publication

NCLP partner Jossey-Bass has recently published a book on leadership by MSL PI Susan Komives and research team member Wendy Wagner. Leadership for a Better World: Understanding the Social Change Model of Leadership Development is available to NCLP members at a 20% discount at the Jossey-Bass website.

4/22/2009 – Printable Overview

This printable overview of the MSL instrument is now available for download. It provides additional information about MSL scales, variables, conceptual and theoretical models, etc. It also suggests ways in which MSL data could be used for assessment, evaluation, and research.

4/22/2009 – Gannon Fellowship

MSL Co-Principal Investigator Dr. John Dugan was recently named a Faculty Fellow with the Gannon Center for Women and Leadership at Loyola University Chicago. The fellowship will release Dr. Dugan from all teaching responsibilities for the spring 2010 semester. During this time he will be engaged in active research through the Center using data collected as part of MSL 2009. The focus of this research will be on understanding the pathways through which college women’s overarching leadership potential (i.e., leadership efficacy, leadership capacity, and leadership behaviors) is developed as well as conditional influences of race in this process.

The Gannon Center is home to the first Women’s Studies program at a Jesuit university in the United States as well as the Women and Leadership Archives.

4/6/2009 – NASPA Certificate

Susan Komives, John Dugan, and Julie Owen were NASPA's Spotlight Series recipients for April, 2009. They were honored with this certificate of acknowledgement.
